Bangladesh v England, 2016-17

Wisden's review of the second ODI, Bangladesh v England, 2016-17

15-Apr-2017
At Mirpur, October 9, 2016 (day/night). Bangladesh won by 34 runs. Toss: England.
The teams served up another thrilling game - but with extra spice. Having this time chosen to bowl, and with England chasing 239, Buttler found himself sifting through the rubble of 26 for four, following an inspired burst from Mashrafe bin Mortaza. He played a superb hand, pulling with control, until Taskin Ahmed - who had already disposed of Bairstow - rapped him on the pads. The umpire said no, but the review proved successful. Mortaza and Sabbir Rahman irked Buttler by giving him a mighty mouthful, for which they lost 20% of their match fees; Buttler himself was reprimanded for turning round to confront the fielders. "There is no need to run in someone's face and celebrate," he said. England's tail wagged, before Mortaza had Ball caught on the slog to finish with four for 29. Earlier, the efforts of England's bowlers ought to have been enough to clinch the series. After Woakes bounced out the openers, Mahmudullah held things together, before Mortaza produced the first of his match-turning contributions, adding 69 for the eighth wicket in 49 balls with Nasir Hossain, and later admitting: "I just slogged, man!" There was another flare-up after Bangladesh had sealed victory - their fourth in six one-day internationals against England, after losing the first 12. Stokes was furious with Tamim Iqbal over a verbal volley at Roy, and what he perceived to be a cursory handshake with Bairstow. The tour headed for Chittagong, bitter but beautifully balanced.
Man of the Match: Mashrafe bin Mortaza.
