England v West Indies

Wisden's review of the fourth ODI, England v West Indies

11-Apr-2018
At The Oval, September 27 (day/night). England won by six runs (DLS). Toss: England.
Three days after his Bristol heroics, Ali's perfectly timed smash and grab sealed the series, and helped lift spirits after news broke on the eve of the game of Stokes's arrest. Ali had arrived when England, set an imposing 357, were struggling at 181 for five; the 20-year-old Joseph had become the youngest West Indian to take five wickets in a one-day international, all in the space of 28 legal deliveries. With rain imminent, England trailed by 37 on DLS, only for Ali to take 16 from three balls off Nurse, and change the momentum.
By the time the downpour arrived, he had 48 from 25, Buttler 43 from 35, and England were narrowly ahead. The late onslaught overshadowed some venomous hitting from Lewis. After Woakes had reduced West Indies to 33 for three, Lewis's 176 from 130 balls, including 17 fours and seven sixes, condemned the boundary-riders to mere spectators. It was the highest ODI score at The Oval (beating Roy's 162 a year earlier against Sri Lanka), and he had his opening partner Gayle's West Indian record 215 in his sights when he jammed a full-length delivery from Ball into his right ankle, forcing him off the field with 3.4 overs to go; an X-ray confirmed a hairline fracture. He had added 168 with Holder, a West Indian record for the fifth wicket, leaving England needing to score more runs to win an ODI batting second than they had ever managed. With Alex Hales unavailable, Roy returned to the top of the order after being dropped for the Champions Trophy semi-final, and creamed 84 in 66 balls during an opening stand of 126 inside 18 overs with Bairstow. Joseph instigated the collapse, but Ali was not to be denied.
