England's highest one-day total against India - for four days - was still no match for the class of Kohli. His 27th ODI century was a gem, even by his standards, and his 15th in a successful chase, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's record of 14. It included an array of audacious shots, none better than an outrageous clip-cum-pull to despatch a Woakes slower ball for six over wide long-on. Kohli's improbable alliance for the fifth wicket with Kedar Jadhav, playing on his home ground, yielded a scarcely believable 200 in 147 balls, and rescued India from 63 for four as they pursued a daunting 351.

England's plan, according to Morgan, was to keep Kohli off strike, but they had reckoned without Jadhav's uncomplicated hitting. His 65-ball hundred was the sixth fastest by an Indian, yet it was barely noticed by a Kohli-obsessed full house. That England scored as many as they did was down largely to Stokes's late barrage. He made 62 off 40 balls, with five sixes on this small ground, as England plundered 105 from the final eight overs.

They had, however, scored only 30 between the 35th and 40th, and Morgan's post-match assessment was that the flourish disguised other flaws. Roy was out-thought by Jadeja, and stumped, having cracked 73 from 61 balls. As so often, Root, who had joined the limited-overs leg of the tour late because of the birth of his first child, anchored the innings, though his 78 took 95. Willey struck twice with the new ball, before Yuvraj Singh (in his first ODI for more than three years) and Dhoni (back in the ranks after ceding the captaincy to Kohli) fell cheaply. For England, though, that was as good as it got.
