Indians v Derbyshire

Wisden's review of the second tour match, Indians v Derbyshire

15-Apr-2015
At Derby, July 1-3 (not first-class). Indians won by five wickets. ‡Derbyshire 326-5 dec (B. T. Slater 54, B. A. Godleman 67*, W. J. Durston 95, H. R. Hosein 53*) and 156-3 (B. A. Godleman 56*); Indians 341-6 dec (C. A. Pujara 81, S. T. R. Binny 81*) and 143-5. County debuts: B. D. Cotton, H. R. Hosein. Derbyshire chose from 12 players, and the Indians 18. India went into the Test series with a win, but were criticised for refusing to engage with their fans. Wayne Madsen was at the toss for Derbyshire, then sat out the game due to a back problem, handing over to Chesney Hughes. This time Ishant Sharma was called for nine no-balls in the first innings, and umpire George Sharp seemed lenient with several others. Wes Durston capitalised on some overpitched bowling to make 95 off 90 balls, while 17-year-old Harvey Hosein reached his fifty on first-team debut before an agreed declaration after 90 overs. Ben Cotton was promised a drink from coach Graeme Welch if he could take Virat Kohli's wicket, and bowled him via the inside edge for 36, prompting a swilling gesture towards the balcony. Stuart Binny, meanwhile, staked a Test claim with 81*. The teams agreed to bat for half of the last day each, and India reached their target of 142 with time to spare.
