New Zealand v India, 2013-14

Wisden's review of the fourth ODI, New Zealand v India, 2013-14

15-Apr-2015
At Hamilton, January 28, 2014 (day/night). New Zealand won by seven wickets. Toss: India. One day international debut: S. T. R. Binny.
Taylor's ninth one-day international hundred eased New Zealand to only their fourth bilateral series win over India. It was an innings more notable for deft late cuts than big shots: a batsman with a penchant for the slog-sweep, Taylor limited himself to 14 runs between backward square leg and midwicket. After Ryder and Guptill fell in successive overs, Taylor added 130 with the inevitable Williamson, and an unbeaten 92 with Brendon McCullum to guide New Zealand home with 11 balls to spare. India's three frontline seamers were especially costly, with combined figures of 24.1-0-174-2. India made changes: Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina gave way for Rayudu and debutant seamer Stuart Binny (son of 1983 World Cup hero Roger). But their innings still began poorly. Promoted to open, Kohli fell to Southee's judicious use of the short ball, skying to square leg in the fourth over, and Rahane hooked Mills to long leg in the ninth. Sharma batted fluently but, when Southee removed Ashwin to make it 151 for five in the 34th, the innings was on the brink. Dhoni, with 79 off 73 balls, and Jadeja, who made 62 off 54, ensured something competitive with an unbroken stand of 127. But New Zealand were getting used to winning.
Man of the Match: L. R. P. L. Taylor.
