Pakistan v England, 2015-16

Wisden's review of the first ODI, Pakistan v England, 2015-16

15-Apr-2017
At Abu Dhabi, November 11, 2015 (day/night). Pakistan won by six wickets. Toss: England.
England's recently revamped side began this series eager to maintain the white-ball momentum they had gained during the summer, but were perhaps a little over-eager at first. After being undone by spin in the Tests, they found themselves surprised by Pakistan's seamers, and never fully recovered from losing three wickets in the first 19 deliveries. Roy was bowled pushing half-forward to the second ball of the game, Mohammad Irfan curling an inswinger between bat and pad.
Root fellleg-before when Anwar Ali nipped one back, then Hales departed to a juggling catch at slip byYounis Khan, who had been recalled after a poor World Cup, only to announce on the morning ofthe game that this would be his final one-day international; Shaharyar Khan, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, criticised the timing of the decision. From 14 for three, Morgan and Taylor forged a restorative stand of 133. But both fell in a second cluster of wickets, this time four in 32 balls, including a poor call from Taylor that led to the run-out of Buttler. Topley, in his second one-day international, gave England brief hope, swinging the new ball to take three early wickets, including Younis for nine. But Mohammad Hafeez, continuing his form from the Tests, went on to reach his 11th ODI hundred - and first against England - while Babar Azam confirmed his promise with a sparky unbeaten half-century. An ultimately straight forward win came with more than sixovers to spare.
Man of the Match: Mohammad Hafeez
