Somerset v New Zealanders

Wisden's review of Somerset v New Zealanders

15-Apr-2016
At Taunton, May 8-11. New Zealanders won by 66 runs. Toss: Somerset. County debut: J. H. Davey. Watling, captaining a New Zealand side short of six IPL players, produced a solid half-century to turn around an unpromising position of 133 for six on the opening day. The damage was inflicted by Groenewald and debutant Josh Davey, a medium-pacer known to the New Zealanders after his three wickets for Scotland unsettled them during the World Cup in February. A fragile Somerset, defeated in their first three Championship games, trailed on first innings after left-arm seamer Ben Wheeler, one of three young replacements for the missing seniors, carved through the top order in an aggressive opening spell of 7-5-6- 4. Santner was out six short of a century as the New Zealanders stretched their advantage to 343, despite Groenewald completing career-best match figures of nine for 136.Although Hildreth, their one truly in-form batsman, made a sparkling hundred, Somerset crashed to 142 for seven, before Overton and Groenewald put up a bit more of a fight. Craig exploited the first real turn of the match to pick up five wickets, profiting when Overton trod on his stumps attempting a pull.Close of play:first day, New Zealanders 202-7 (Watling 52, Wagner 9); second day, New Zealanders 149-3 (Santner 70); third day, Somerset 142-6 (Hildreth 62, Davey 5)
