South Africa v Zimbabwe

Wisden's review of the third ODI, South Africa v Zimbabwe, 2014-15

15-Apr-2015
At Harare, August 29, 2014. South Africa won by 61 runs. South Africa 231 (49.5 overs) (H. M. Amla 66, Q. de Kock 76; J. C. Nyumbu 3-42, P. Utseya 5-36); ‡Zimbabwe 170 (38.3 overs) (Sikandar Raza 35, S. C. Williams 46; D. W. Steyn 3-36, R. McLaren 3-24). South Africa 5pts. MoM: P. Utseya.
South Africa sauntered towards the halfway point of their innings, seemingly nailed on for a big score. But Quinton de Kock reverse-swept Prosper Utseya to Tendai Chatara just inside the circle. Rilee Rossouw played back and edged low to slip - joining New Zealand's Nathan McCullum in bagging golden ducks in his first two one-day internationals - and the next went on with the arm to strike David Miller, another left-hander, bang in front. Utseya thus became the second Zimbabwean to take an ODI hat-trick, after Eddo Brandes against England here in 1996-97. He went on to claim a maiden five-for after ten years in the international game and, with A. B. de Villiers rested, South Africa collapsed from 142-0 to 163-6 - their worst sequence for the first six wickets. Still, it was not enough for Zimbabwe. Tino Mawoyo's inclusion alongside Sikandar Raza was the sixth different opening partnership of their season, but this one lasted just 17 balls until Mawoyo was run out. Aaron Phangiso breached the defences of Masakadza and Taylor in consecutive overs, before Dale Steyn and Ryan McLaren ripped through a brittle middle order.
