At Dambulla, August 31, 2016 (day/night). Australia won by six wickets. Toss: Sri Lanka. One-day international debut: W. I. A. Fernando.
Journeyman seamer Hastings claimed a career-best six wickets to help Australia seal the series. His opening partner Starc set the tone: faced with 18-year-old debutant Avishka Fernando - picked to replace Tillekeratne Dilshan, despite not having played a single senior game - he pinned him in front in the first over. Sri Lanka slipped to 31 for three, before de Silva, given a first chance to open, counterpunched to a maiden ODI fifty in a stand of 84 with Mathews. But the captain retired hurt after tearing his calf, and minutes later de Silva miscued a pull off Hastings, who ripped through the lower order to leave Australia 213 to win. They had ground to victory in the previous fixture; here they sprinted, winning with 19 overs to spare. Finch hit his first four balls, from Aponso, for four, and brought up a formidable half-century from 18 deliveries, matching Simon O'Donnell and Glenn Maxwell as the quickest for Australia in an ODI. Bailey continued the ballistics, roaring to 20 from five, before settling down.
Man of the Match: J. W. Hastings.
