Victoria XI v South Africans

Wisden's review of the tour match, Victoria XI v South Africans

15-Apr-2017
At Melbourne, November 19, 2016 (day/night). Victoria XI won by 53 runs. Victoria XI 258 (45.2 overs) (S. E. Gotch 53, M. W. Short 52, E. P. Gulbis 53; K. Rabada 3-37, T. Shamsi 4-72); ‡South Africans 205-4 (50 overs) (H. M. Amla 81*).
The South Africans chose from 15 players, and Victoria from 12. A late burst from Evan Gulbis - 53 from 28 balls - propelled the home side to 258. Kagiso Rabada bowled only four overs, but Morne Morkel sent down nine in an unavailing bid to prove his fitness ahead of the Third Test. In a reversal of the previous warm-up game, Shamsi was now more effective, and claimed Maharaj's place for the pink-ball Test. The South African batsmen put practice under lights ahead of winning the match: Elgar retired after a leisurely 60-ball 40, and no one bettered Amla's strike-rate of 71.
