West Indies v South Africa

Wisden's review of the ninth match, West Indies v South Africa

15-Apr-2017
At Bridgetown, Barbados, June 24, 2016 (day/night). West Indies won by 100 runs. West Indies 5pts. Toss: South Africa.
A magnificent, counter-attacking hundred from Bravo meant West Indies qualified for the final at South Africa's expense. The hosts had crashed to 21 for four against the searing pace of Rabada, who found Charles's edge and yorked both Samuels and Ramdin. Morkel nearly added Bravo, whose top-edged hook was parried over the rope for six by Parnell. A short rain break three balls later allowed West Indies to draw breath and, on resumption, Bravo and Pollard nullified Imran Tahir and savaged the seamers to put on a match-shaping 156 - a West Indies record for the fifth wicket, beating 154 by Carl Hooper and Shivnarine Chanderpaul against Pakistan at Sharjah in February 2002. Holder and Brathwaite chipped in, and South Africa needed 286 to qualify. Instead, they were hobbled by Gabriel - who bowled consistently over 90mph on his way to three for 17 - and Narine. From 65 for six, there was no way back, leaving de Villiers to insist that the players, and not South Africa's coach Russell Domingo, deserved the blame.
Man of the Match: D. M. Bravo.
