In a game billed by Cook as a shootout for the second opener's spot in the Tests, Compton moved ahead of Root during a second-innings 64 not out lasting more than three and a half hours. Cook himself sat out the match against a scratch Mumbai XI, supplemented by Cheteshwar Pujara from Saurashtra and Delhi's Shikhar Dhawan. The England captaincy passed to Broad, who added to their injury worries when he underwent a scan on a bruised left heel on the second evening. They had been rescued on the first day by a century from Bairstow, who added 156 with Morgan and 107 with Patel before becoming the second victim for seamer Javed Khan, playing despite the death of his father the previous evening. Anderson dropped Pujara on 22 at slip off Panesar and, by the time he made amends, Pujara - India's Test No. 3 - had scored 87. But from 210-2, Mumbai A lost eight for 76 to hand England a lead of 59. Compton, who had failed on the opening morning, now knuckled down against a mediocre attack to move into pole position for the First Test after Root misjudged an in-jagger from Shardul Thakur.
