The South African Invitation XI chose from 12 players and the New Zealanders 13, of whom 11 could bat and 11 field. New Zealand's bowlers went wicketless for the first 53 overs of the hosts' innings, as Rassie van der Dussen and Matthew Kleinveldt, a 23-year-old cousin of Test bowler Rory, put on 161. To make matters worse, the New Zealanders lost Peter Fulton from the tour with a recurrence of a knee injury.
