Hales smashed England's biggest Twenty20 score, surpassing Morgan's unbeaten 85 at Johannesburg in November 2009, but was distraught to miss their first century. He fell to his haunches after playing round a yorker from Rampaul when he needed one for his hundred and four to win. His high-class innings, on home turf, was full of clever strokes to leg, including each of his four sixes as he sought to harness a strong cross-breeze. Above all, Hales ensured West Indies would head home without an international win on tour. They might have fancied their chances after Smith's early fireworks and a late flourish from Bravo and Pollard, who added 65 in 28 balls. But Hales put on 159 with Bopara for the second wicket - an England all-wicket record, and the third-highest stand in all Twenty20 internationals - to keep up with the rate. Both fell with the end in sight, but Morgan completed England's joint-highest successful Twenty20 run-chase with two balls to spare.
