Wisden's review of Ireland v New Zealand, World Twenty20, 2009
15-Apr-2010
At Nottingham, June 11. New Zealand won by 83 runs. New Zealand 2 pts. Toss: Ireland.
Twenty20 international debut: A. J. Redmond.
Ireland slumped to their second heavy defeat inside 24 hours, in the face of fine batting
- and inspired fielding. An imposing total was set up by Aaron Redmond, who was only
added to New Zealand's squad on the day of the match as a replacement for the unwell
Jesse Ryder. Redmond, who had been playing club cricket in the Bolton League, sprinted
off the blocks with seven fours from his first ten balls, and achieved the not-inconsiderable
feat of outshining Brendon McCullum (one of whose shirts he had been forced to borrow,
with the name taped over). Guptill, whose four boundaries were all sixes, and Styris kept
up the momentum. Ireland needed a good start if they were to compete, but Porterfield
was unluckily run out in the first over when the bowler Mills touched a straight-drive into
the stumps. That was the first of four run-outs, two down to quicksilver direct hits from
Brendon McCullum (in the outfield, and captaining because of New Zealand's continuing
injury problems), who also made a sharp catch at midwicket off his brother's bowling look
easy.
Man of the Match: A. J. Redmond. Attendance: 14,997.
