Horace Brearley, the father of former England captain Mike, has died at the age of 94. He turned out once for Yorkshire in 1937 and at the time of his death was their oldest living player.
A teacher by profession, he taught at King Edward VII School in Sheffield after getting a degree at Leeds, staying there until 1946 when he moved to the City of London School.
He played twice for Middlesex in 1949, the last outing against Somerset in a side which included 16-year-old Fred Titmus making his debut; 33 years later Titmus's final appearance was in a Middlesex team led by Mike Brearley.
One former pupil taught by Brearley recalled that when his son was England captain "if he went into bat during his lesson, Horace would take us off to the TV room to watch".
