Jason Mohammed breaks into West Indies T20I squad

Jason Mohammed, one of the only bright spots to emerge from a series whitewash by England, has been called up to the West Indies T20I squad for the first time. The 30-year old batsman struck back-to-back fifties earlier this month and could be vital to a team missing some of its biggest players.

Chris Gayle has not played international cricket since the 2016 World T20. On top of that, Dwayne Bravo's hamstring injury and Andre Russell's ban took away two of the world's best allrounders from Carlos Brathwaite's side.

But there was good news on Friday, when it was learnt that Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine, Samuel Badree and Lendl Simmons were picked for two of the four T20Is against Pakistan from March 26. A WICB release listing the 16-man squad on Saturday confirmed all four men were available to play the entire series.

Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul also has the chance to be capped for the first time in T20Is. He picked up 12 wickets from eight List A matches in January and February and will likely be the understudy to legspinner Badree and offspinner Narine, both in the top 10 of the ICC bowlers rankings in the shortest format.

Batsmen Jonathan Carter, who has recently become a regular in ODIs, and Rovman Powell, whose power-hitting has invoked comparisons with Russell, pushed the number of uncapped players in the squad to four. The experience of Marlon Samuels, Jerome Taylor and Jason Holder could offset that, although Holder has not played a T20I for West Indies since 2015.

People using excuses that the games are being held in Trini so that's the reason for the big Trini contingent. Let me ask a question. Name a player in the West Indies who can Take Lendl Simmons, Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine and Samuel Badree's place in the West Indies T20 team. These are all players in demand all over the world in every T20 league. Narine and Badree are both in the top 10 best bowlers in the world in the format. Pollard and Simmons' records speak for themselves. Evin Lewis in the absence of Gayle made a 48 ball century against India and Jason Mohammed is deserving of his place as well, so I can't understand the logic. If it weren't for an inept WICB these players would make up the ODI squad and some even in the Test squad. Actually 2 more trinis could have been there in the Bravo bros and they deserve their place as well, so someone help me with the problem some people on this forum are having please.

@Cricinfouser The Pooran ban was supposed to be for ODI and Test cricket only and he was supposed to be eligible to play T20's. I agree that his decision was stupid especially knowing the consequences before he made the decision.

    1 Simmons. 2 lewis 3. samuels. 4. mohamed. 5 Walton 6 R Powell 7 flecter. 8. brathwaite. 9. Taylor. 10 narine 11. badree. I think that's a decent team and I hope the selectors are reading this.

WHNS Poor an will not be selected after breaching his contract with the Leewards. Therefore he's paying the Piper, that was s bad decision on his part.

I agree that holders captaincy is nothing short of horrible but as a player he has some potential. what baffles me is fletcher selection. the guy is a hit or miss player and 8 times out of 10 he misses. Walton would be the better bet as keeper, he has been in good form recently as well. would have loved to see a full strength wi squad someday though with the likes of gayle, bravo and Russell in the mix. imagine a wi line up with the likes of 1. gayle 2. lewis 3 simmoms/wk 4. Lil bravo 5. big bravo 6. pollard 7. Russell 8. rovman 9. Sammy 10. narine 11. badree. with carter, pooran, kesrick and rampaul rounding of the 15 man squad. would love to see that squad for the next t20 world cup surely we would be favourites to defend the title...
