50 overs India 318 for 5 (Harmanpreet 102, Rodrigues 50) vs England
Harmanpreet Kaur's century set England a mammoth target of 319 to win the final ODI and the series at Chester-le-Street.
With the series level at 1-1, India scored 318 for 5 off the back of captain Harmanpreet's 102 from 84 balls. She was well supported by Jemimah Rodrigues' 45-ball 50 and 45 runs apiece to Smriti Mandhana and Harleen Deol.
Harmanpreet, the third Indian player to pass 4,000 runs in women's ODIs, arrested a lean run of form by passing fifty for the first time in 13 innings in the format. Since scoring 54 in the 50-over warm-up match against an ECB Development XI at the start of the tour, her best score in either of the white-ball series against England had been 26 in the fourth T20I.
Rodrigues took a liking to off-spinner Charlie Dean, helping herself to three fours twice from consecutive overs, accessing all areas of the ground.
Harmanpreet was also dealing largely in boundaries, clipping Linsey Smith over mid-off and sweeping over square leg, either side of receiving attention from the team physio for what appeared to be a lower back complaint.
Another four over square leg took her past 90. After Rodrigues gloved an attempted pull off Lauren Filer to Amy Jones behind the stumps moments after bringing up her fifty, Harmanpreet raised her seventh ODI century pressing a flighted Smith delivery through mid-off. England were left to rue a missed opportunity to remove Harmanpreet on 22 with the score 132 for 2 when Filer struck the pad but the home side failed to review, with replays suggesting she would have been out.
Harmanpreet eventually fell chipping a drive to Nat Sciver-Brunt, who took a sharp diving catch at cover.
Sophie Ecclestone, who in a pre-match interview revealed that she considered quitting cricket in the aftermath of the off-field drama surrounding England's T20 World Cup and Ashes failures, was by far England's most economical bowler.
Ecclestone, No.1 on the ODI bowling rankings, took 1 for 28 from ten overs while Filer, Lauren Bell, Charlie Dean and Linsey Smith all paid heavily for a solitary wicket each.
Harmanpreet's decision upon winning a toss for the first time all tour raised a few eyebrows given the overcast conditions but she said she wanted to give her four-pronged spin attack something to defend. Unless England can produce the highest successful run-chase in women's ODI history, she has more than done that.
