Arthur Haygarth was born in Hastings, Sussex in 1825. He came from a prosperous middle-class family and as a gentleman cricketer appeared for many teams including the MCC, his native Sussex, Surrey & Middlesex. In 1841 Haygarth began collecting information about cricket from home and abroad and continued to do so for more than sixty years. By publishing the majority of his findings, and in so far as English cricket is concerned he missed remarkably few games, he achieved cricket immortality.
