In the annals of Namibian cricket, few can match the statistical all-round heft of Craig Williams, who finished his career as his side's all-time leader in first-class, List A and T20 runs and record-holder for catches by an outfielder in first-class and List A cricket, while coming second only to Gerhard Erasmus in T20 cricket.
Born in Oshakati, near the border with Angola, prior to independence from South Africa, Williams did his schooling in Pretoria, where he was team-mates with Roelof van der Merwe, before making a national debut for Namibia in the CSA provincial three-day competition in October 2007. A half-century in each innings was a portent of things to come.
In a team that often had plenty of dashers come and go, Williams had a stabilising approach, most often at No. 4. But he was also versatile, adapting to almost any situation based on the talent around him. During the course of his career, he scored centuries at every position from opener down to No. 7, a feat that few in the Associate world can match.
Williams was almost as prolific with his brisk and canny medium pace, and versatile too, rotating from new ball to first or second change throughout his career. He is one of only four players to take 100 or more wickets for Namibia in both first-class and List A cricket.
After initially retiring following Namibia's failure to advance out of the top two from World Cricket League Division Two on home soil in 2018, he had a change of heart and came back to play a pivotal role in the same tournament a year later. The team won and secured ODI status after which Williams helped them qualify for their first T20 World Cup. His 40 against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi at the main event showed a glimpse of his class to the broader world.
Williams finally called it quits in 2022, but not before claiming two Player-of-the-Match awards in Namibia's historic 3-2 series win over Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, their first bilateral T20I series win over a Full Member.
