An enterprising wicketkeeper-batsman, Grant Morgan appeared to be primed for big things as a player. Instead, he made his name as a coach.

Morgan was schooled at Grey High School in Port Elizabeth, which also produced Graeme and Peter Pollock, and played for the 1989 South African schools side. He went on to represent the University of Port Elizabeth and the provincial side. In 1993, Morgan played against the touring English side. He carved out a solid career at domestic level but struggled to break through to higher levels. He retired in 2002 and took up coaching.

Armed with a Level 4 diploma, Morgan coached the University of Pretoria team, Bloemendal club in the Netherlands and, in 2008, was an assistant to Ray Jennings with the South Africa Under-19 side that reached the final of the age-group World Cup.

His first major appointment came after that when he was put in charge of provincial side Gauteng, but it was only when he moved to Pietermaritzburg to take over the KwaZulu-Natal Inland side that major success came. Under Morgan, the team won both limited-overs trophies in the 2013-14 season and then the three-day and 20-over cups in the 2015-16 summer. He was named head of coach of the Dolphins franchise ahead of the 2016-17 season.
