Jim Hutchinson played more than 250 times for Derbyshire between 1920 and 1931, his one appearance for another side coming in 1924 when he was picked for a very weak Players side against an equally poor Gentlemen's XI.

Despite being an ever-present in the Derbyshire middle-order for a decade, Hutchinson never passed 1000 runs in a season, his best year coming in 1928 when he fell 10 short. At the end of July he had scored more than 800 runs but a wretched August did for his chances.

He scored five hundreds, the best being his first - 143 against Leicestershire in 1924 - but he endured a poor 1930 and that form did not pick up the following year and he was dropped and then not re-engaged at the end of the season. In addition to his moderate tally of runs, he was an outstanding fielder, and in 1929 Wisden was taken to note that "there was no finer cover point in county cricket than Hutchinson."

When he died in November 2000, he was the longest-lived ex-cricketer whose age has been incontestably established.
