A right-arm seamer and genuine tailender, Steve Malone had spells with three first-class counties as well as three Minor Counties. He played twice for Essex between 1975 and 1979 before moving on to Hampshire, where he enjoyed his only significant run in the first team, initially as a one-day specialist but then in both forms of the game. In 1983 he took 48 wickets at 37.43, but his career best came a season earlier when he took 7 for 55 against Oxford University. He moved to Glamorgan for one season in 1985, and from there to Durham (1986) and Dorset (1987) before finishing with Wiltshire. He spent some time on youth coaching and was admitted to the first-class umpires reserve list in 2008.
