As it happened - The Lanka Premier League 2023 auction
Overview
- Over 500 players have signed up for Lanka Premier League auction, according to the SLC, where five teams have been given a purse of US$ 500,000 each
- Babar Azam, David Miller, Shakib Al Hasan and Wanindu Hasaranga are among the big stars already signed up for the fourth edition of the tournament
- Each team will have a squad for 20-24 players, inclusive of a mandatory six overseas players and 14-19 domestic players
Done and dusted! (for real this time)
At a glance, it does seem that Jaffna have done well once more in keeping together the nucleus of their champion squad. And in adding the likes of Dilshan Madushanka, Nuwan Thushara, Asitha Fernando and Hardus Viljoen they've managed to boost their seam bowling ranks as well. Once you then add David Miller (Icon Overseas signing) into the mix, they're once more looking like the team to beat.
Kandy though seem to have been extremely astute as well. In securing both Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Wanindu Hasaranga (Domestic Icon signing) their spin department is sorted. They then have Dushmantha Chameera leading the pace line-up. If they get their batting combination right, they could be genuine contenders.
As for Dambulla, winning the bidding war for Sadeera Samarawickrama to supplement an explosive batting line-up that consists of the likes of Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis and Kusal Janith Perera, could prove to be a key moment.
Colombo and Galle are probably the only sides that you could look at and perhaps question the balance of the squad composition, but the with both teams boasting game-changing gtalenst such as Babar Azam and Shakib Al Hasan respectively, this could shape up to be the most competitive LPL yet.

Done and dusted! (but not quite)
And that is that! The first ever LPL auction has come to an end! Or has it? Just as we were winding up, the Tournament Director announced that each team would be allowed a Wild Card signing. This would be an overseas player from their pre-signing budget NOT the auction budget. So we could still see the arrival of more stars!
Not sure exactly how that works for Colombo Strikers, Dambulla Aura and Galle Titans though, all of whom managed to fill up their 24-man rosters. But that is problem for another day I guess. No such issue though for B-Love Kandy (22) and Jaffna Kings (21), both of whom have slots remaining.

Charu Sharma breaks down the rules
Auctioneer Charu Sharma kicks things off. He starts off with some warm words for Sri Lanka and the LPL, before going through the rules of the auction. The gist of it is that each incremental bid starts off $500, before going up a notch to $1000 at $10000 and then up to $2000 once it hits $20000. Each team of course has a purse of $500,000.
Wasim Akram has a question from the crowd over whether all registered players are available, which Sharma confirms is in fact the case.

The LPL auction officially gets underway
Presenter Ridhima Pathak gets things underway introducing a brief video package highlighting the action from previous seasons.
Next we have Samantha Dodanwela, the Tournament Director, who gives out his opening remarks reminding everyone of the difficulties SLC has had to face in putting together in successive seasons. He also thanks all those who have made this possible, before giving way to Anil Mohan, the head of IPG, which handles all the marketing for the LPL, to make some brief remarks as well.
And then we have a quick reminder on the pre-signings, which leads into a small discussion between Roshan Abeysinghe and former Sri Lankan Test cricketer Malinda Warnapura on the best way to put together a squad.

Change is in the air!
Just a bit of housekeeping before we get started. As has become customary in the LPL, yet another season will be greeted by team name changes, with no less than half the league switching things up!
The erstwhile Colombo Stars are now the Colombo Strikers. The Kandy Falcons aren't soaring any longer either, but now will be smothering you with love. No, seriously. It's in the name...show some love for B-Love Kandy.
And then there was one. Galle was the only franchise not to have switched names at all since inception, but on the eve of the auction it was announced that, along with new owners, the former gladiators would now be known as the Galle Titans.

LPL hits the big time!
The time is nigh folks! After three seasons of waiting, the fourth time's the charm as the LPL has finally joined the select few T20 leagues to bring forth an auction!
And we're bringing you all the action, as it happens, from the heart of the beast. The auction itself is set to start in about 15 minutes or so, but while you wait all the details you need can be found in our handy little explainer.
