Touted as a bowler with a "huge ceiling," by Paul Wiseman, New Zealand's talent identification manager, Ben Lister is a left-arm seamer who can swing the new ball and bowl slower variations in the end overs.

Lister earned his maiden call-up to the New Zealand senior side for the T20Is in India at the start of 2023 after having chalked up consistent performances for New Zealand A and Auckland in domestic cricket. He then made his ODI debut for New Zealand later in the year in Karachi, where he came away with the wicket of Babar Azam. After Trent Boult gave up his New Zealand central contract to become a freelancer, Lister was lined up to fill that void, especially in white-ball internationals.

Lister has also attracted interest in T20 cricket outside of New Zealand, having stints with Nottinghamshire in the T20 Blast and Surrey Jaguars in the Global T20 Canada.
