11.45am: That's a wrap, guys and girls, thanks as ever for keeping us company through a thoroughly compelling series. I'll leave you with David Hopps' report, which includes "red-hot" and "feeble" in the headline (see if you can guess which refers to who); there'll be much more reaction and analysis to come from the ground, including some talkies on our video page. England didn't try to park the bus, they barely even left it... You can all go home, too, but join us again for the ODIs, which start next week. Ta ra!

11.25am: Time for the presentations... Starting with South Africa captain AB de Villiers: "We'll enjoy the celebrations to come. Very excited about some of the guys to come through and take the opportunity, very proud of him [Kagiso Rabada], not everyday you come around and take 13 wickets in the match, proud of Temba too. We showed a lot of character. To take seven wickets this morning in the time we did was not part of our thinking. They have match-winners in their team, so we're wary of that, but Morne started us off well, Dane as well, and it went from there. The team is in a really good space, enjoying their cricket, and it's a good place to be in. We've got a long way to go, bit of a rebuilding phase for us, we've lost some big guys over recent years, we've got guys coming in and learning and hopefully we're going the right way."

The outstanding Kagiso Rabada is named Man of the Match: "It was a bit up and down, so the key was to hit the deck and bowl in a good area and you'll get your rewards. I wasn't telling him [de Villiers] how many overs I wanted to bowl, when he tells me to warm up, I warm up. Credit to [Kyle Abbott] he came out and bowled with half a hamstring. I'm really enjoying playing with the guys."

Ben Stokes is Man of the Series: [prefer batting or bowling?] "I think batting but it's nice to be contributing with both. [Base provided by Cook, Root] It does help, it makes batting really simple, we just let each other play the way we want to. The accidental yorker comes out every now and again, but yeah, it's nice to chip in with wickets as well."

England captain Alastair Cook: "It's been a disappointing five days, the way we've played, haven't quite been on it. Credit to South Africa, we weren't at the races today. We spoke about trying to build a partnership to start with, get these guys into their second and third spells... We didn't get the balance right, we try and play positive but you have to earn the right. Can't really fault the lads too much, we're standing here having won 2-1, they've done well but it shows how much work we still have to do. This [match] was a bit different, in terms of the toss being quite important. We've got players who can change the game, moments when we get on a roll and it's hard to stop us. Taking our catches makes a massive difference to the side... But we'll enjoy today, enjoy the moment, credit to the lads and to our supporters, who put a smile on our faces even when we lose as badly as we did today."

11.10am: England didn't even make it to the drinks break. They might as well have run up the white flag before the start of play and given everyone a refund... They do, however, take the series, 2-1 after that crushing defeat (their second-heaviest, by runs, against South Africa). Kagiso Rabada confirms his arrival in the firmament by equalling South Africa's record Test match haul, held by Makhaya Ntini (and Hugh Tayfield) and AB de Villiers has notched his first victory at the second attempt, ending South Africa's nine-match winless run. Alastair Cook will be the captain lifting the D'Oliveira Trophy but you suspect Trevor Bayliss might have a few comments about England's efforts (sic) this morning before they have the chance to celebrate.

Rabada to Anderson, OUT

full from Rabada, leg-stump yorker and it nails Anderson on the boot, right back in front of his stumps,... Dharmasena doesn't give it but, with the time to confer almost elapsed, South Africa decide to review and it's a good job they did, because Hawk-Eye shows the impact to be in line and Anderson to be plumb in front! Rabada has 13 and it's unlucky for England, they've been utterly shuttlecocked today: South Africa win by 280 runs

James Anderson lbw b Rabada 0 (1b 0x4 0x6 3m) SR: 0

England have lost six wickets in just over an hour... There might have been a Rourke's Drift spirit in the dressing room at the start of the day but this has become a run-of-the-mill massacre

"Now you want to sound clever regarding Ntini's hall. I have been sending messages the entire morning regarding this only to be ignored." Apologies, PietSkiet, you can take a bow now
