Length ball outside off, Vastrakar heaves it over the bowler for four
ENG Women vs IND Women, 1st T20I at Mumbai, IND v ENG (W), Dec 06 2023 - Match Result
That's it from us today. Hope you all enjoyed our coverage. After two days, England will take on India, hoping to seal the series, at the same venue on Saturday. Can India fight back and draw the series? We'll find out. For now, I am Srinidhi Ramanujam signing off on behalf of Valkerie Baynes and Sudeep Poojar. Stay hydrated, and take care!
Sciver-Brunt, the player of the game: "I am really happy. Been playing cricket in Australia, so really happy to be back with England and put up a performance like this. We wanted to be brave and take the attack to opposition. Danni did that pretty well and we were able to build that partnership, she took that pressure off me. What's great about us is we have different strength. We worked together well in a partnership. Happy for her 100th game. Wicket was pretty good, there was something for spinners if you bowl in right area and the slower balls were quite effective which made it slightly difficult for the batters."
Knight, England captain: "Really good game. We continued to attack, picked the right areas, had a good partnership. It's the way we want to approach the game. We want to put the pressure back on opposition. I would have bowled first. We were really pleased with the total, quick outfield. [one area to improve] A lot of extras we conceded, we could improve on that."
Harmanpreet, India captain: "We didn't follow our plans. New bowlers will learn quickly before heading to T20 World Cup. I know it's a tough game. They are very good batters, they have played good cricket for so many years. we had slight change in bowling department so we will come back stronger. I was expecting good fielding, but when you are away from international game, pressure could get to you. [On chase] We just needed to back ourselves, we were looking for good start. After a couple of wickets, we had control over the game but the last ten overs didn't quite go to plan."
Wyatt: "Really enjoyed out there, pitch was tricky, back of length ball was hard. Nat was scoring runs calmly, we probably did well with the bat. There was a bit of movement off pitch. Renuka is a world class bowler, so we backed ourselves for a big partnership. It was nice to be back out there. We had a good two weeks in Oman, it was a bit different. We worked hard. Similar conditions like India. Looking forward to the next game."
10.12pm: England clinch the first T20I comfortably by 38 runs and take 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Defending a mammoth 197, left-arm spinner Ecclestone, who was coming off her shoulder surgery, outplayed India in India with 3 for 15 from four overs. Shafali was the only one to keep the scorecard ticking with 52 off 42 but with no support from other end, India looked lost in chase. Kemp, Sciver-Brunt, Glenn also chipped in with a wicket each for England and kept the hosts at bay. Earlier, it was Sciver-Brunt and Wyatt fifties that led England to 197 after being down to 2 for 2. En route, they also put on 138 runs which titled the game in England's way. Returning Renuka's three wicket-haul went in vain for India.
