the stumps are a mess and South Africa have finished this with 5 overs to spare! Junaid makes room to smash it, McLaren fires it full on the base of the stumps and sends it scurrying a few yards back, he picks up four for 19
South Africa vs Pakistan, 5th Match, Group B at Birmingham, Jun 10 2013 - Match Result
Presentation:
Misbah: "It was a good bowling effort, 234 was getable. You needed 4.5 an over, we could not knock it around or rotate. The batsmen were in form in the practice games but I don't know what happened. The pitch was a little slow, but we could have chased it. We need to forget about these two games before we meet India."
AB de Villiers: "The victory is sweet. We got more than 200 against a quality attack on a tough wicket. The three spinners bowled very well. I wasn't happy with 234, we set it up so well to get to 270 even. After I got out I thought 220 was also a good score. Morris had a wonderful debut. We protected the square boundaries well. Dale Steyn will most probably be ready for the next game."
Amla is the Man of the Match: "The wicket was a bit difficult early on. We were just going to play normal cricket. It's been tough going with the two white balls. We have a really good squad, a young team."
So there you have it, Pakistan will have to hope India lose to West Indies tomorrow and then beat India comprehensively. South Africa have done really well to get their chances up.
That's it from us here. We hope you enjoyed the coverage. Do catch us for India v West Indies tomorrow. It's a day game so it starts at 9.30 GMT. Thanks for the mails and your company. Cheers!
End of match: No Steyn? No Morkel? No problem. South Africa made this look far easier than they would have imagined, given Pakistan's uncertain batting. It would have lifted them greatly seeing a debutant Chris Morris set a high standard at the start - his two wickets really pegged Pakistan back. They shed the idea of bowling short and instead bowled fuller, cramping the batsmen for room. The pressure started piling up and for the second time, Misbah had too much to do.
Our post-match Huddle is starting soon.
There is still hope for Pakistan though, but only if Windies win both their remaining matches, and Pakistan beat India. Then Pakistan, India and South Africa will all have one win each, bringing NRR into play. If any of those results don't happen Pakistan are out.
full length delivery squeezed to the on side
drills a full ball down to mid-on, the fielder his the stumps at the bowler's end and Irfan ground his bat, they could have taken an overthrow off the deflection but Irfan had no clue
the slower bouncer and he makes room to pull but misses it
Priyadarshi Mishra: "Better for Pakistan to play out the 50 overs now and reduce the victory margin and then pray for West Indies to beat both India and South Africa. Considering their current NRR even that scenario seems tough."
South Africa getting done with the formalities, this was banged in short, Ajmal was only aiming for the straight boundary nevertheless, miscued to mid-on
short of a length outside off and he pushes it to cover
backs away for the slog and he swishes at thin air
backs away and miscues him down to midwicket
makes a lot of room and miscues the pull
short outside off and he pushes it down to mid-off
short of a length and angling across him, he pushes it wide of point
This is why Pakistan should never have let go of guys like Azhar Mahmood. He's the finisher they're missing, and Razzaq too
pushes it down to long-off
gets back to cut and he cuts to short third man
Anupam: "How the world has changed for Sir Jadeja, people are requesting him to play during the slog overs!! #Respect.."
the reverse sweep hasn't really been a success tonight has it? Riaz is brave enough to attempt it, Phangiso fires it on the leg stump, not the most ideal shot for that ball, hits the woodwork
slashes and gets an outside edge past the keeper, third man mops up
another one! Tossed up on the pads, Riaz slogs and it's in the air and down to deep square leg
misfielded! This was pushed towards the pads, he sweeps and Tsotsobe misfields at short fine leg, he gathers himself and tries to pull it back but in vain
just as a few supporters leave the ground in disappointment Ajmal blazes one through cover, it was full and wide and bashed between two fielders
full and wide outside off and he swings and misses
