wide on the crease, a round-house pull, a spiralling top-edge, Roy claims the catch at deep midwicket, and England have qualified for the Champions Trophy semi-finals!
England vs New Zealand, 6h Match Group A at Cardiff, Jun 06 2017 - Ball by Ball Commentary
6.57pm Right, that's your lot. It's been a potent display from England, who are the first side into the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy. But it's all still to play for in Group A. Have a read of David Hopps' match report, hoover up our highlights if you are in UK, Australia or Ireland, and tune back in later for Andrew McGlashan and Mel Farrell's reports from the front line. See you tomorrow for South Africa v Pakistan at Edgbaston.
6.51pm Eoin Morgan speaks: "We weren't that pleased at the half-way stage, maybe 30 short of par. But it shows with the batting line-up we've got, upwards of 300 always leaves you in with a shout."
Kane Williamson: "They bat very deep with a lot of power, so restricting them wasn't a bad effort. In all areas, England outplayed us today. Credit to the way they went about their business, especially with the ball in hand. We were trying to get momentum, and increasing that run-rate to chase down the total. It was a tough job, England used the dimensions of the ground well, the wind was a big factor, and the pitch was a bit two-faced."
Morgan says his bowlers learned from the batting innings. "We hit the wicket hard, no value in full with the short straight boundaries. We weren't too greedy, just hit the seam on a good length.
"It feels good to be in the semis but we are not satisfied. We want to fulfil our potential."
Williamson says New Zealand will front up against Bangladesh and "hope that these guys can help us out a bit."
6.50pm Time for some presentations. Jake Ball is Man of the Match for a decisive new-ball spell, and final figures of 2 for 31. "The rain had juiced the pitch up so it was a matter of getting it in the right areas," he says. "You have to be prepared to go round the park now and again, and cherish the days when you come off the field with decent figures." Right areas. He's got a dose of the Montys in his post-match interview, but he certainly did what he said he planned to do.
6.45pm Plunkett wraps up the match with his second four-wicket haul in as many games. He is a vital factor in their line-up, as they march on to Edgbaston on Saturday, and an opportunity to eliminate Australia in the group stages. Quite the incentive for an otherwise dead rubber!
a firm strike to mid-off
mavR: "How long before Sixer Southee begins to smash them into the stands and make a mockery of this total ?" It's only a matter of time. Keep the faith!
an ambitious spank down the ground, Plunkett keeps picking off the wickets! Miscued off the splice to a tumbling Rashid at mid-on. Start the car!
Snehil: "@Miller Aus vs Eng may be blood and thunder. But aren't thunders usually accompanied with rain." Ah ...
short again, pulled firmly, but only as far as deep square leg
taps the single
missed pull
Matt: "Remember Southee's 77 on test debut against which team.... England" I do. I was there. He smokes a long ball
tight to the body, worked to the leg side
another single to keep the pot boiling
worked off the pads, and well, the boundaries keep coming. But it's flat out there now
Ryan: "Not smart by the Kiwis going all or nothing here, with the way this group is lining up, they should have considered their net run rate, and got as close as they could."
an inside-edge past the keeper. Every little helps
Sadish: "Assuming ENG wins this, ENG-AUS gets washed out, and NZ-BAN gets a result, 2 teams will finish on 3 points. Who gets to semis other than ENG in that case? Thanks." Good question. Fairly sure it is decided on wins first. If it was a tie between three wash-outs (not now possible) it would be highest seed to go through.
flogged across the line, Anderson had to have a go, but he's holed out to deep midwicket! That, right there, is the game
still limited to singles by an aggressive deck-hitting length
Huzefa: "@Edwin: Correction. Anderson scored that 100 in 36 balls." Six overs... it's about possible ...
short, an attempted pull, deflects through to the keeper
outside off, fenced through third man
Ben: "That's an incredible stumping. Google, down the leg side and a half volley. Don't underestimate how good a stumping that it. Underlines how he has improved with the gloves." Quite so
outside off stump, deflected through the gully region
strides forward to smother on the front foot. Eight to go. Still 103 needed
Edwin D'Souza: "Anderson has hit a ODI century in 39 balls...he can chase this down with 2 overs to spare :-)" Indeed. Never say die
tossed high above the eyeline, inside-edged drive through square leg
attempted flick through the leg side
forward
Asad: "What a boring CT so far...no competitive matches and plenty of rain...sigh" Early days yet... have faith! England-Australia will be blood and thunder
on the toes, tucked square
