Scorecard summary
India 133/9(20 overs)
South Africa 137/5(19.4 overs)

10:50pm What does this result mean for Pakistan? It means they will have to bank on Bangladesh to pull off an upset. It also means that India cannot lower their guard further. Another glance at the points table, which shows South Africa are atop the Group 2 standings. Right then, that is all we have from this game. Tomorrow, hosts Australia take on Ireland in their Group 1 fixture. So make sure to join us then with your comments. Till the next time, on behalf of Alan, Hemant and Venkat, this is Sudarshanan signing off. Ciao, aficionados!

10:45pm Time for the presentations.

First up is Rohit Sharma, India captain: "We expected the pitch to have something in it, with the weather around. We knew there will be help for the seamers. Which is why you saw that 130 was not an easy chase. I thought we fought well till the end but South Africa played well in the end. The pitch is such that the wicket can come any time for the seamers. It was a match-winning partnership from Miller and Markram. But we were not good enough on the field. We have played in such conditions so conditions are not an excuse. We want to be consistent in that department. We could not hold on to our chances, we misses a few run-outs including myself. [On that Ashwin over] I have seen what happened at the last with the spinners. So I wanted to finish with Ashwin before the last over. I wanted to see that the seamers bowl the right overs. Given the new batter came in, it was the perfect time for Ashwin to bowl."

Temba Bavuma, South Africa captain: "[On the discussion at the ten-over mark] It was try and up the intent. When you do that, opportunities come your way. Fortunately we got the momentum we needed. Our batting line-up is in good form, barring myself. It is a unit that has been together for sometime. [On their bowling] We were watching the games that were played here. Obviously it was risky but the variable bounce assisted us. We kept mid-off and mid-on up, which made us predictable but we backed ourselves. We came into the tournament as non-favourites and we will keep flying under the radar. We will keep improving and that's what we are doing."

Hamza: "Waittt, so according to Lungi Ngidi. SA indirectly knocked out pakistan using pakistani teams strategies!!!"

Abdul: "Is it green day, all 3 teams with green jersy wins..."

Sanjeev: "Ashwin's first ball was bad but I think the choice to get him that over wasn't wrong. Once David got an easy six of the first ball, things changed!"

10:40pm Markram dropped by Kohli off Ashwin - is that the turning point of the chase looking back? South Africa were 40 for 3 at the halfway mark and needed 94 from thereon. But they knocked off 45 of those in the next four overs. India were left searching for answers and their fielding also let them down at that point.

But once Ngidi had broken the back of the Indian batting with his burst, there was almost no looking back. He picked up two wickets in his opening over and followed it with one apiece in his next two. Although Suryakumar Yadav played a scintillating knock to get India to a decent score, it was always going to be too little if India failed to find wickets regularly, which is what eventually happened.

10:35pm India's first loss in this T20 World Cup and also makes the situation shaky for Pakistan. Killer Miller does it yet again this year and continues a sensational year for him. He had a superb IPL 2022 for champions Gujarat Titans and there has been no looking back from there. Along with Aiden Markam, Miller ensured that despite a shaky beginning to the chase, South Africa manage to come up triumphs and do so clinically.

Miller is getting warm, bear-hugs from all his team-mates and each one deservingly so. The senior stateman has ensured that his side aces a tricky chase in seaming conditions.

Lungi Ngidi is the player of the match: "[On the finish] It was very nerve-wracking. When games get so close, you cannot do much as a bowler but just sit. It is one of my biggest wins - to win an award at the World Cup. It comes down to watching a lot of games being played here. We have also played here earlier. We saw Pakistan bowl and it helped. Just after the ten-over break, Markram moved the game forward and Miller followed him."

Bhuvneshwar to Miller, FOUR runs

Full and outside off, Miller smashes it over cover to seal a five-wicket win for South Africa and go at the top of the points table.

Just one needed...

4
Bhuvneshwar to Miller, FOUR runs

Banged short, Miller goes for the pull and it comes off his glove, flies over the keeper for four. Predictable length with the field.

Fine leg, deep square leg, deep midwicket are out in the deep on the on side.

1
Bhuvneshwar to Parnell, 1 run

Length ball around middle and leg, he punches it towards covers and gets Miller back on strike.

Kapil Baldawa: "Ashwin should have bowled the 20th over. Shami 18th, Bhuvi 19th and who knows what could have been the tgt in last over, which would have been huge pressure" Hindsight is yet to accept my friend request :)

19.1
Bhuvneshwar to Parnell, no run

Dot ball to start. Length ball on the pads, he misses the flick and it goes off his pads to the off side.

Kumar to have a go with five to defend, South Africa need six.

Bhagawathi Sury: "A low scoring game produces another terrific contest. Superb game of cricket. "

Bangs it short and outside off, Miller misses the pull and looks at the square leg ump for the wide. But it is all fine.

Shami to Parnell, 1 run

Length ball around off, Parnell makes room and slashes but gets a thick outside edge. On the bounce to deep third.

Shami to Miller, 1 run

Yorker but well outside off, digs it out to the off side and gets to the other end. Miller throws his head back as he does that.

Prashant: "Does mankading accounts a legal delivery?" Running out the non-striker is the word. And no, it does not count as a ball.

18.3
Shami to Miller, no run

Full and angling in on middle and leg, he gets an inside edge onto his pads as he looks to flick.

18.2
Shami to Miller, no run

Length ball outside off, he misses the cut.

Shami to Miller, FOUR runs

Slashes and slashes hard. Length ball outside off, Miller camps back and throws his bat at that. Almost goes the distance to the deep third fence. Reminiscent of Shan Masood's dismissal earlier today. Brings up a fine half-century for Miller, too.

A run-a-ball 12 needed for South Africa and Shami will bowl the penultimate over. Around the stumps

Martin MJ: "Had Ashwin got the wicket in first ball of the over, it could have been a different scene "

Ashwin to Parnell, no run

Fires it on the pads, he misses the flick. Two dots to end.

Ashwin aborts after getting to the bowling crease. Perhaps asking Miller to be cautious. He had dragged his bat out while trying to back up...

17.5
Ashwin to Parnell, no run

Darts it full and fast just outside off, Parnell misses the cut.

Wayne Parnell is in next. A slip in.

Ashwin to Stubbs, OUT

Trapped in front! Stubbs goes, Ashwin rejoices but South Africa take the review. Ashwin lands it on a length, bowls it slower through the air. It is the attempted carrom ball. Stubbs gets low to play the reverse sweep but misses to get hit on the knee roll via the arm. Clipping the wickets, says Hawk-Eye. South Africa retain the review but lose a wicket.

Ashwin to Miller, SIX runs

And it disappears again. Full and outside off this time, Miller doesn't have to do much to make room. Smashes it way over long-off.

Pant asks Ash to slow it down. He comes from over the wicket.

Ashwin to Miller, SIX runs

Smashed and smashed for half a dozen! Tossed up full around middle, he clears his front leg and hits it over the sightscreen.

Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar and Shami have one over each. How do India defend 25 off 18? What does Rohit do? He goes for Ashwin. Is it strategy or more to save time? The umpires are hurrying India, too.

Valiant effort from Rahul running to his right from long-on. Banged short, Stubbs pulls it towards the vacant deep midwicket ropes. Made really good contact.
