IPL 2023 - Live Report: Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Punjab Kings, Hyderabad

By Deivarayan Muthu

Tripathi, Markram guide SRH home

Sunrisers Hyderabad145 for 2 (Tripathi 74, Markram 37*, Arshdeep 1-20) beat Punjab Kings 143 for 9 (Dhawan 99*, Markande 4-15, Jansen 2-16) by eight wickets
Shikhar Dhawan watched nine wickets tumble around him, but he stood out amid the rubble, his unbeaten 99 taking Punjab Kings to a respectable 143 for 9. That total looked even more respectable when Sunrisers Hyderabad lost their openers Harry Brook and Mayank Agarwal early and when the slower balls gripped the Hyderabad surface.
But Rahul Tripathi rose above the conditions to score a sprightly half-century and give Sunrisers their first victory of the season. He contributed 63 in an unbroken 100-run stand off 52 balls with his captain Aiden Markram to help Sunrisers ice their chase and hand Kings their first defeat of the season.

Tripathi gets cracking

When Chahar darts it outside off, Tripathi plays late and just uses the pace of the wristspinner to glide it behind point. Then, when Chahar slows it up and tosses it up higher, Tripathi stretches out and slog-sweeps it against the break over midwicket. He then welcomes Services leggie Mohit Rathee into the IPL with a straight six. He has settled SRH's chase along with his captain Markram.

Agarwal holes out

Agarwal is on a run-a-ball 20. The asking rate rises. So, he decides to take a risk and dares to slog-sweep Rahul Chahar from the stumps but he can only splice it to long-on. SRH are 45 for 2 in the ninth over, chasing 144.

Arshdeep breaches the defences of Brook

Having been bumped up to the top, Harry Brook seemed comfortable when there was pace on the ball. Arshdeep Singh then cuts the pace down to 117ks in the fourth over and bowls Brook through the gate with a knuckle ball. Gone for 13 off 14 balls. Ellis, too, is finding some grip with his slower balls. This might not be a straightforward chase for SRH.
PBKS could've also dismissed Agarwal in the powerplay had Jitesh not dropped him on 14 off Ellis.

Dhawan 99*, PBKS 143 for 9

Dhawan falls just short of a century, but he has single-handedly given his attack something to defend. He closes out the innings by depositing Natarajan's full toss over midwicket for six. "It is one of my best innings," Dhawan says after collecting the Orange Cup. "I'm glad the Hyderabad crowd still remembers me."
Dhawan was responsible for 52 runs in an unbroken 55-run last-wicket stand, which is now an IPL record.

Dhawan stands tall

Dhawan has watched nine wickets tumble around him. At one point, PBKS were in danger of being dismissed for a sub-100 total, but their captain has dragged them past the three-figure mark with his second successive half-century. He gets there by launching a cutter from T Natarajan over midwicket for six. Dhawan is only the second player to part of all ten partnerships in an IPL innings, notes Sampath Bandarupalli. Parthiv Patel was the first (RCB vs CSK in 2019).

PBKS six down and sinking

Impact Player Raza comes and goes. He ramps a 142kph short delivery from Umran Malik straight to deep third for 5 off six balls. Sharukh Khan begins with a first-ball four off Malik, but falls to spin soon after. Markande dangles a legbreak past the outside edge of Shahrukh before pinning him in front with a skiddy wrong'un. PBKS are 75 for 6 in the 11th over.

Markande dents PBKS' recovery

The swing has disappeared. Dhawan is taking trips down the pitch and hitting over the top. Then, when T Natarajan goes short and wide, he cuts him through point. Curran, who has been promoted to No.5, also gets cracking by launching Jansen over the top. He then greets wristspinner Markande into the attack with a chopped four. But Markande strikes back in his first over to have Cuuran slice his wrong'un straight to short third. PBKS are 63 for 4 in the ninth over. They respond to the collapse by bringing in Raza as an Impact Player for Prabhsimran

Jansen goes bang bang

There's swing on offer in Hyderabad, and SRH are making the most of it. Marco Jansen strikes with his second legal ball to pin IPL debutant Matt Short lbw for 1. The next ball is also an inswinger, which pings Jitesh Sharma's pad. Umpire Oxenford raises his finger once again, but Jitesh - or rather Dhawan - calls for a review, with ball-tracking indicating that it would've missed leg stump.
Jansen, though, has Jitesh chipping a drive to mid-off for 4 off 9 balls. PBKS are 22 for 3 in four overs.

Bhuvneshwar strikes first ball

The seam is bolt upright. Bhuvneshwar Kumar puts it on a length and gets it to swing back in to beat the inside edge and thump the back pad in line with middle. Prabhsimran Singh, who smashed 60 off 34 balls against RR in his last game, is trapped for a golden duck. He decides against a review and walks off. Ball-tracking indicates that it would've clipped the top of middle.

Sunrisers opt to bowl in quest for first win

Punjab Kings captain Shikhar Dhawan says that there was no dew last night when they practiced. They make a forced change with Matt Short replacing the injured Bhanuka Rajapaksa. Welcome!

Sunrisers came out looking like a really strong team out of the IPL auction in February, but they had to start their season without their captain Aiden Markram, and when he did come in for the second game, their seam-bowling strength was completely cut down by a Lucknow pitch that was slow and low and turning.
Now Sunriers are back home at Hyderabad, which typically offers true-paced wickets made for hitting through the line as a batter and hitting the deck as a bowler. Both teams will welcome that, even if Punjab are in a better place with two wins in two (which they achieved without Livinstone and Rabada).
