West Indies make it 4-1 in style, Boult connects off the final ball, but only gets it high towards long on, where big Pollard settles under it, takes the catch, and tumbles theatrically onto the ground a couple of times, for effect
West Indies vs New Zealand, 5th ODI at Basseterre, Jul 16 2012 - Ball by Ball Commentary
The first of two Tests starts on July 25 in Antigua at 10 am local time. Join us then. Abhishek Purohit signing off, Sid Ravindran is updating his match report. I am off for now. Cheers
Players and match officials getting medals. Darren Sammy collects the series trophy now
Sunil Narine is the Man of the Match, and the Man of the Series. Narine: "Good feeling being able to come out and produce for your country. I am a bit nervous but I tend to try and keep cool, the hard work pays off at the end." His figures of 5 for 27 are the best for WI v NZ, and also the best on this ground.
Darren Sammy: "I think Narine is just world-class, having him gives us confidence especially when you are defending. We won most of the key sessions, we had one off day, the third game, but came back very strongly. Everybody performed, Chris and Marlon in the first couple of games, then the lower middle order, Sunil was consistent. So far everybody is on the park, Ravi got his rest, we have rotated the bowlers well."
Ross Taylor: "It was pretty similar to the last game. Last 15 overs with bat and ball, Windies played better than us. We need to learn from them. First two games we were completely outplayed. Today we had our chances, Russell and Narine took it away from us. Narine's a good bowler, still very new to Tests, and we don't have to attack him much."
Sunil Narine, five games, 13 wickets, average 11.23, economy-rate 2.92. Windies would have lost the final two games, had it not been for Narine
Can't call this series a straightforward thrashing despite the 4-1 scoreline, but New Zealand could well carry over the freeze of the final two ODIs into the Tests. I hope they don't, that is a different squad. But they had got into winning positions in both the games, more so today, when they needed 36 off 30 with four wickets in hand, but sank against Narine. Not preparing well for a tour does not stand long as an excuse if you end up losing six of seven games. There were the injuries as well, but on the whole, New Zealand were simply outclassed
West Indies have an emphatic ODI series win, their first over top Test opposition since April 2008. The question was how the middle order would stand up if Gayle failed. It didn't, the lower order had to bail them out twice. Also, the top order barring Gayle was disappointing. Not sure No 3 is the long-term position for Dwayne Smith. Andre Russell batted too low, and the bowling, barring the outstanding Narine, did not look exactly threatening, Still, the lack of fight and depth in this New Zealand side has given them a 4-1 series win, a rarity, and it is an occasion to celebrate for Windies
Andre Russell: "I am a bowling allrounder, But I am enjoying my batting so far."
Dave is understandably irritated with NZ;s display: "I'm not quite sure why we even bothered to send a team over? If it was for the purpose of embarrassing ourselves then we have achieved that goal. Considering where this team is going next then the ultimate "ship sinking" scenario will be played out and any pride will have vanished with the ship."
another miss, by both batsman and keeper
now backs away and misses one outside the leg stump, Thomas misses with the throw as they think of a bye
tries to dab one in the blockhole outside off, misses
slow and short outside off, takes a hand off the bat as he drags it to midwicket
Mark: "It's tough being an NZ fan these days. Every time they get themselves into a good position and raise your hopes they throw it away. Heck Martin couldn't play Narine any worse than these guys."
goes full for the stumps, is smacked down to long on
Prashant: "First part of this series was Gayle vs NZ and second part was Narine Vs NZ."
full delivery, he makes room and swipes it down to long on
chance of another run out, throw misses from extra cover, gone by a mile had it hit, they get the overthrow instead
direct hit from mid off, but he seemed to have made it, comfortably, as replays show
has a go at a full ball outside off, and misses
makes room and slices it in the air to third man, Russell goes for the catch, it falls just in front, but he does well to stop it, Best is still not satisfied
They needed 36 off 30 with four wickets in hand, How far back does that seem now?
Narine has five, and he has almost sunk New Zealand again, Mills makes room to have a go at a carrom ball, misses, and it spins across to hit off stump
offspinner patted away off the front foot
swiped away to deep midwicket
slip in place, in the 48th over
no clue to the carrom ball as it spins past the outside edge from a length
did not want to keep it to the last two overs, went after Narine, and has perished, skipped out a couple of steps and bent down for the slog sweep to one tossed up outside leg stump, and missed as it spun across to clip the top of the stumps
still bowling from round the stumps
dabbed straight to short third man
did it carry, Sammy tumbling to take it at midwicket and immediately throwing to the non-striker's, Mills' swipe reaching Sammy just on the bounce
charges out again, manages an inside edge square on leg
