South Australia's attempt for three Pura Cup victories in a row suffered a severe setback when they were dominated by Western Australia at the WACA. The Redbacks had returned to form with wins in Adelaide and Brisbane, but they were floored by Mathew Inness' 5 for 59 and slipped for 184 after winning the toss.
Further damage was inflicted by Justin Langer in the final session as the Warriors knocked 103 from the target by stumps. They will need only 82 on day two to claim first-innings points after Langer breezed to 76 from 89 balls while Chris Rogers took his time over 27.
Jason Gillespie, who struck 10 fours, provided the only sparkle for South Australia and his unbeaten 51 showed-up his recognised batsmen. By lunch the Redbacks were 5 for 75 and they lost Andy Delmont and Graham Manou within eight runs after the break. Relief came when Gillespie and Dan Cullen combined for a valuable 63.
Cullen collected 33, the second-highest score, and was bowled by Inness, who added his fifth wicket when he finished the innings by taking Paul Rofe. Brett Dorey's 3 for 53 included the dismissals of Callum Ferguson (15) and Nathan Adcock (0) while Steve Magoffin captured 2 for 30 from 17 overs.
