South Australia suffered a late blow in their reply to New South Wales' commanding first innings of 6 for 483 as they slipped to 2 for 99 at stumps on the second day. The import Younis Khan had moved to 49 when he hit at a wide one from Doug Bollinger in the second last over and was caught at first slip.
It was an unfortunate conclusion to a useful response to the home team's total. Michael Klinger, one of the form batsmen of the season, was unbeaten on 20 at stumps after Mark Cameron yorked the opener Daniel Harris for 20.
The Blues captain Dominic Thornely put the aims of the team in front of his own by declaring the innings while he was on 87. The decision came in the over following Daniel Smith's dismissal for 96 when his attempted hook from the part-time bowling of Harris went to mid-on. Smith gave the innings a huge boost by hitting 16 fours in his 102-ball contribution, which followed the opening-day hundreds of Phillip Hughes and Ben Rohrer.
New South Wales started the morning on 4 for 278, with Thornely on 29. He played patiently, occupying 213 deliveries and hitting 11 fours and a six. Usman Khawaja became Daniel Christian's second wicket when he glanced to Graham Manou on 41.
