Peter Forrest's unbeaten century led Queensland to a commanding lead on the third day, and set Victoria a stiff challenge to draw the match at the MCG. The home side, however, made a strong start to their second innings, with their openers putting on a century stand.
Queensland resumed their first innings on 5 for 285, already ahead by 75, and Forrest batting on 88. He converted it into a large hundred - 155 not out - and put on 105 runs for the eighth wicket with Cameron Boyce, who made 66. Alister McDermott scored 34 off 31 balls at No. 10, adding 46 with Forrest before Queensland declared their innings on 8 for 483. John Hastings took 4 for 102 for Victoria.
Facing a deficit of 273 in their second innings, Victoria made a bright start. Dean Russ and Rob Quiney put on 109 for the first wicket and batted through until stumps. They still trailed by 164 but had all their wickets intact.
