A century stand for the second wicket between New South Wales' Nick Larkin and Scott Henry was cancelled out by a five-for from South Australia's Johan Botha in Adelaide, which kept the visitors to 227 for 9.
New South Wales batted, and a platform was laid by Larkin and Henry, who added 110 runs to take the team to 147 for 1 before Henry fell to Botha for 56. Larkin too was accounted for by the offspin of Botha, but not before he got to a maiden half-century in just his second first-class game.
After the pair was taken out, there was little resistance offered by the middle and lower-middle order - Daniel Hughes with 28 was the next highest scorer - with pacer Joe Mennie also chipping in with a couple of wickets. New South Wales finished the day on 227 for 9.
