rocks back and pulls a slower ball to the leg-side sweeper - and that's it, South Africa win by 88 runs and complete a 5-0 whitewash that takes them to No. 1 in the ODI rankings
South Africa vs Sri Lanka, 5th ODI at Centurion, Feb 10 2017 - Match Result
9.30pm: Something of an anticlimactic ending at Centurion - but let's given those [Tony Greig voice] "little Sri Lankans" a pat on the back for scrapping through until the end. Asela Gunaratne's hundred may not quite have been the equal of either Quinton de Kock's or Hashim Amla's but it gave a measure of respectability to the final result. I wouldn't be surprised if that ninth-wicket stand was up among the best... but, small SL victories aside, this has been a series of South African dominance. They were set up by a 187-run opening stand here, after SL had asked them to bat, and never looked like slipping up in pursuit of a 14th win in a row at home. They are No. 1 in the world, deposing Australia... and that's where we'll leave them. Thanks for your comments, cheerio!
"This is the first 100 by a Sri Lankan batsman batting at No.6," reports Nirosh Fernando "#welldeserved." The plaudits keep coming...
short and swatted, set himself in the crease and powered a pull in front of deep midwicket for one more boundary
full outside off, slower ball and Gunaratne swings at it and misses
slightly full outside off and Lakmal pokes it into the covers and lumbers off diligently for one more
slips in the yorker, Lakmal manages to get some bat on it
Here's LankanBeya: "More than 25% of Lakmal's career runs have come in this game...and this is his 58th game. What an innings!!" Another reason to love him
pitched u on the stumps, comes down and drive through mid-on
So, Rabada finishes with 10-0-55-0 and we are one over from SL limping through their allocation for the first time in the series...
full length, 144kph and homing in on the stumps, Lakmal digs it out
"No access to tv, following CricInfo commentary... How is Gunaratne's celebration like? Maiden 100 at the end of a whitewash - excited/subdued/mixed??" Fairly chuffed with himself, Raj. And why not - how many chances do you get to celebrate an international hundred?
banged in short outside off, thinks about playing and then drops the hands
pitched up on off stump, Lakmal works it into the leg side
full and wide, has to reach for it, squirted out to deep cover
dug in short and zinging through to the keeper
good length, shaping away past Gunaratne's unsuccessful swish - but that's too wide
Gunaratne makes an early move but then has to jam down on the ball as Rabada fires it in full
Two overs to go. Can SL pass 300 for the second time in the series (maybe even on tour)?
pitched up on the stumps, dug out down the ground to long-on
in the channel, Guna drops back and steers the ball towards point
full outside off, driven towards mid-off where AB misfields
"SA is gonna win this series 5-0 but still worried about this bowling attack, against stronger opponents and in tougher games it may come back to haunt us," murmurs Tiaan
full and straight, clipped off the pads
pitched up and this is sliced off the outside edge for four more to third man. On he rumbles...
pitched up wide on the off side, thumped away square... and it beats the diving fielder on the boundary, there it is, Gunaratne's maiden ODI hundred! His second fifty took just 25 balls! Applause on the SL balcony for another notable individual achievement on a tough tour
"If butterflies had delayed the game for several hours, what would have been D/L method target?" No idea, Akseli... but way out of sight, I would guess
goes full and straight, 144kph but Lakmal is equal to it, blocked back down the track. SL should have opened with these two
