Timber! Gul finishes the innings the same manner in which he started, full and straight on the pads, Fernando was rooted to the crease, the ball hits his pad and rebounds to the off stump
Pakistan vs Sri Lanka, 3rd ODI at Dubai, Nov 18 2011 - Ball by Ball Commentary
In the end Angelo had too much to do and kept losing support. But Pakistan deserve a lot of credit for applying the stranglehold and not letting things slip after they got rid of Sangakkara and Dilshan. Fittingly, it was Afridi who turned things around with that direct hit to send back Sangakkara. What also didn't help Sri Lanka was that the final Powerplay had too many dot balls. You could see that Mathews was struggling for confidence. It was always going to be difficult getting the spinners away.
All in all a fascinating one-day contest. These close chases of scores involving 250 always make for compelling viewing. We will be back for the presentation.
Hafeez is the Man of the Match: "It was a bit hard to time the ball because it was stopping a bit. It was a bit tough bowling in these conditions but the captain had confidence in me."
Dilshan: Sanga's riun-out and my dismissal was disappointing. The bowlers did really well to come back in the last 20 overs. I should have batted through."
Misbah: At one stage we were looking to score 300 but we kept on losing wickets. The bowlers did a really good job for us, especially Hafeez. We were hopeful that once we made their required run-rate over six, we were in with a good chance."
So Pakistan were the deserved winners today. They applied the pressure when it mattered the most. Thanks for joining us today. The next game is on Sunday at Sharjah. Same time. We'll see you then. Cheers!
bowls the slower ball and Fernando jams it down on the pitch
Angelo sends for some more bats. He's trying everything now
difficult to put those away, close to a yorker length, he forces it down to long-on
Now Angelo can only play in one gear. He has to go for it and not play safe anymore
the slog sweep and Afridi takes the catch, Prasanna got forward and tried to get under the bounce and slog it over deep midwicket, the slower ball did him in, Afridi was there to take it
full and swinging towards the pads, makes room and pushes it down to the deep on the on side
another low full toss and he clips it towards long-on
low full toss and he pushes it down to long-off
understatement to say that was a welcome boundary for SL, full and wide and Prasanna whammed it off the front foot past the diving cover fielder
and once again a clever change of pace, bowls it from wide of the stumps, Prasanna has a swish but he was too early on the shot
full and on the stumps, too good for Prasanna, he can only tamely push it down the pitch
slower ball, swings hard and he fails to force it to the open spaces past midwicket
31 needed off 18, Mathews has another chance. He's up against Tanvir again
a scoring opportunity there because it was a low full toss swinging in, he only managed to inside edge it to his pads
This is inching closer towards Pakistan
full and swinging in, Prasanna gives it everything but only succeeds in placing it to midwicket, another dot ball
Gul gets it to zip past the outside edge, beaten him for pace, too good for Prasanna
bowls the slower ball and he stays rooted to the crease and holds back on the hoick over the on side he was aiming for
strays towards the pads and he clips it off his pads down to fine leg
he takes the aeriel route over the on side but finds the sweeper at deep square leg, just a single
gets forward and pushes it back to the bowler, gives the strike back to Mathews
Pakistan have this firmly in their control here! Angelo Mathews still looks circumspect and he's running out of partners
he's got it to go straight through! Perera was foxed, the ball landed on off and straightened, played down the wrong line and he lost his off stump
full on the stumps and driven down to long-on
