Ramnaresh Sarwan scored 158 and Sewnarine Chattergoon narrowly missed out on a century as the West Indians played out a draw on the final day of the three-day tour match against Auckland at Eden Park's Outer Oval.

The batsmen made good use of the friendly conditions and West Indian coach John Dyson would be pleased with the players hitting form ahead of the first Test against New Zealand starting Thursday in Dunedin.

Opening the day on 82 for no loss and trailing by 505 runs, the West Indians quickly lost Xavier Marshall, who could add just two to his overnight score of 45, bowled by Michael Bates.

Sarwan came in and steered the West Indian innings through the middle session along with Chattergoon. The pair put on 116 runs for the second wicket before Chattergoon was snapped up at midwicket by Martin Guptill off Tarun Nathula for 93. He hit 11 fours and one six in his gritty knock off 247 balls.

Kyle Mills then had Leon Johnson trapped leg before for 5 with the score reading 248. However, Sarwan continued to flourish and hit 22 boundaries and two sixes before retiring with the West Indians on 336.

Lance Shaw's double-strike accounted for Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Sulieman Benn and exposed a few chinks in the batting line-up, but was not enough to trigger a collapse as captain Denesh Ramdin (37) and Fidel Edwards (18) held firm till stumps.
