1997 Intake of the Australian Academy Announced

The 1997 intake of the cricket Academy was announced yesterday and contained a few surprising things. One being the presence of 4 pace bowlers aged in the mid 20`s. The four, Western Australian left armer Jeremy Allen (played two Mercantile Mutual Cup games), Tasmanian Robert Hodgson (toured Zimbabwe with Tasmania), New South Welshman Daniel Horesley, and South Australian Andrew Eime, are part of a different approach by the academy, to avoid injury besetting the younger quicks. The other surprising induction is 15 year old Tasmania wrist spinner Shannon Tubb. He is the youngest player ever to be taken to the academy and comes highly rated by the spin brotherhood.

+ Simon Katich (WA), middle order batsman who played Mercantile Mutual Cup for WA in season 1995/96

+ Brett Lee (NSW), 19, fast bowling brother of Australian ODI player Shane Lee

+ Adam Smith (VIC), 20, Australian under 19 captain, a batting allrounder talk about for Victorian selection during season 1995/96.

+ Paul Sutherland (NSW), 19, Sydney offspinner successful in the last 2 Australian Under 19 series

+ Shannon Tubb (Tas), 15, highly rated left arm wrist spinner

After the under 17 carnival in Melbourne a development squad was selected to visit the Academy in April for a week. The squad was:
