New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has opted out of the ongoing domestic HRV Cup Twenty20 tournament as he rests a sore back ahead of the upcoming home series against Pakistan that begins on December 26.
Vettori was the only bowler to send down more than 200 overs in the India Tests, and nursed a troublesome back for the rest of the tour. He missed the first one-dayer but came back to lead the side in the remainder of the series.
"The shoulder is okay, I've just got a few issues with the back from the Test matches," Vettori said on his return to New Zealand following the tour of India. "I get a little bit of a break now, I'll hopefully rest up and get ready for the Pakistan series because obviously that's pretty important for us."
New Zealand had a forgettable time in the subcontinent, losing each of their last 11 completed one-dayers, all in the three countries that will be hosting the World Cup next year. The Pakistan series - which comprises three Twenty20s, two Tests and six one-dayers - is their final opportunity to build some confidence ahead of the big event.
