Stylish Jamaican batsman Wavell Hinds has been added to the West
Indies squad for the fourth and final Cable and Wireless Test against
Australia starting on Saturday in Antigua.
Hinds, a 22-year-old, left-hand strokeplayer, has been on A tours to
South Africa and India. In 26 first-class matches, he has averaged
27.06 with three first-class centuries and a highest score of 126
against the Leeward Islands.
"I feel honoured, it is my long and everlasting dream to be selected
in the West Indies squad and I hope to take the opportunity with both
hands if I make the final XI," Hinds said last night.
"It will be great to play with the calibre of players such as Brian
Lara, Carl Hooper, Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose as there is a
whole lot for me to learn and grasp at that level ... to make myself
a man in the game," he said.
"It is every youngster's dream in the region to play for the West
Indies team and I will be hoping to carry the flags of my school
(Camperdown High), my club (Kensington) and to make all of Jamaica
proud," Hinds said.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who was initially named in the party for the
Bridgetown Test but subsequently had to be omitted because his right
shoulder injury had not cleared up, was not considered for selection.
The West Indies Cricket Board's executive secretary, Andrew Sealy,
said following MRI scans and examinations, orthopaedic surgeon
Dr.Ainsworth Allen recommended further rehabilitation for Chanderpaul
over the next 10 days.
The West Indies were heading to Antigua later today with an
unbeatable 2-1 lead in the series after their one-wicket win in
Bridgetown on Tuesday. They only need to avoid defeat in Antigua to
reclaim the Sir Frank Worrell Trophy from Australia.
Squad: Brian Lara (captain), Sherwin Campbell, Adrian Griffith,
Carl Hooper, Dave Joseph, Jimmy Adams, Wavell Hinds, Ridley Jacobs,
Nehemiah Perry, Curtly Ambrose, Courtney Walsh, Pedro Collins, Corey
Collymore.
