Across The Board: Better Industrial Relations
WICB Release
The impasse between the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and the
West Indies Players Association (WIPA) was resolved on November
9 and since then the board has reviewed and discussed the recent
events at the ordinary general meeting in Antigua.
There was unanimous agreement that settling the matter as we did
was the right decision in the circumstances and that both
parties we should make a long-term commitment to ensure that
such a sad phase in West Indies cricket is not repeated.
In keeping with industrial relations practice we have agreed
with WIPA to avoid further discussion of the dispute now that it
has been settled. We will say, however, that while the issues
and events during the crisi were complex and constantly changing
, we were focused on ensuring that this historic tour of South
Africa took place. We are satisfied that this was achieved and
we look forward to it continuing smoothly.
We greatly appreciated the tireless optimism and patience of Dr.
Ali Bacher, CEO of the United Cricket Board of South Africa an
organisation for whom this tour was critical.
The WICB also valued the concern of President Nelson Mandela,
the Caribbean governments and the many suggestions and offers of
assistance from so many parts of the region.
We understand the concern of all West Indian people and we know
that even the board's harshest critics have the interest of West
Indies cricket at heart.
The constructive criticisms are being considered as we seek to
develop the WICB for the challenges of the 21st century.
To this end, the WICB at its last meeting in Antigua on Friday
and Saturday November 13 and 14 decided to appoint industrial
relations consultants to review existing procedures against the
background of the recent dispute and make recommendations with a
view to achieving a much improved relationships with the
players. These consultants will advise on how we can work more
effectively with WIPA in the best interest of West Indies
cricket.
The consultants will help us put in place procedures to make the
board more effective and professional in its industrial
relations activity and ensure that there is fairness, clarity,
expedition and effectiveness the settlement of disputes,
grievances and disciplinary matters.
The industrial relations specialists will also be mandated to
advise on the establishment of fair and effective performance
appraisal of players and WICB staff.
A key component of their assignment will be to provide the
necessary industrial relations training for the WICB staff. It
is also encouraging that WIPA have indicated that they will be
taking steps to improve their own communications and internal
organisation to avoid future break-downs.
Finally, we are pleased that in spite of all the turbulence
leading up to this historic tour, we have been able to procure
team sponsorship from Seagrams of US$175 000.
The WICB has also purchased prize indemnity insurance which will
pay-out US$200 000 for winning the Test Series and US$50 000 for
winning the One-Day series, and this will be shared between the
players and WICB.
