Adrian Dale has been appointed as Glamorgan's vice-captain for 2001.
The 32 year old all-rounder made his debut for Glamorgan in 1989 and was Glamorgan's Player of the Year in 2000.
He now assumes the role left vacant by James' promotion to the captaincy for next season.
Steve James, who had been Matthew Maynard's understudy for the past two seasons, said: "Adrian and I have both been on the Glamorgan staff for several years and knew each other well before that, so I think it's fair to say that our working relationship will be a very good one. Clearly the appointment of a vice captain is something any skipper has to think long and hard about but although there were a number of possibilities I believe that Adrian will be the right foil for me and I'm sure that he will do an excellent job. We're both looking forward to working together to the benefit of the team."
