The Sri Lanka Cricket Board (BCCSL) has turned down a request from the team management to send a precautionary fast bowling replacement for the injured Pulasthi Gunaratne.
Ajit Jayasekera, the Sri Lanka manager, had earlier requested cover in case Gunaratne's broken right index finger failed to recover in time for Sri Lanka's crucial clash against West Indies.
However, Anura Tennekoon, the BCCSL chief executive confirmed that the board would only send a replacement if Gunaratne returned to Sri Lanka.
"We will not be sending a replacement to South Africa unless the management there sends the injured player back," Tennekoon told the Daily News on Tuesday.
"It was a policy decision made a while back that if a replacement is requested then the injured player must be sent back."
