Bravo and Pollard put T&T in command

A massive 250-run stand between centurions Darren Bravo and Kieron Pollard put Trinidad and Tobago in a dominant position at Point-a-Pierre, despite two late strikes by Barbados. After opting to bat, the T&T openers Lendl Simmons and Adrian Barath added 51 but Barbados picked up three wickets in fairly quick succession, including two by Corey Collymore, to leave the home team at a precarious 79 for 3. However, Bravo, back from a finger injury, struck 18 fours, while Pollard's innings was laced with eight fours and three sixes as their mammoth partnership was brought up in 363 balls. Bravo fell to Dwayne Smith just before close of play for 111 and Amit Jaggernauth was trapped in front for a duck by Pedro Collins, but even those two quick wickets could not dent the foundation for a challenging first innings score laid by fourth-wicket pair.

Steve Liburd, the Leeward Islands captain, scored an unbeaten 116 to rescue his team from a hopeless position at 29 for 5 against Jamaica at Sabina Park. Liburd was involved in two important partnerships: he added 85 for the sixth wicket with wicketkeeper Devon Thomas and 57 with the No.11 batsman Gavin Tonge as Leewards ultimately managed a score of 221. Fast bowler Andrew Richardson, who took 3 for 59, delivered the early blows, triggering a middle-order collapse in the process and taking all of his wickets before Liburd shepherded the recovery. Legspinner Gavin Wallace then stepped up, taking 3 for 49, including the wicket of Thomas for 37, as Leewards slipped to 164 for 9 before Liburd and Tonge helped them salvage a better total. In their reply, Jamaica lost opener Xavier Marshall early for a duck, but opener Donovan Pagan and Brenton Parchment made 22 each to take their team to 49 for 1 at the close.

Windward Islands squandered a good position after choosing to bat first, to cede the advantage to Guyana at the Providence Stadium. They were comfortably placed at 94 for 1 after opener Kerry Lasporis and Andre Fletcher had helped their team recover from the early loss of Johnson Charles for a duck. However, persistent strikes from the Guyana bowlers, particularly offspinner Veerasammy Permaul who took 3 for 58, helped bowl out Windwards to a below-par score of 215. Permaul was well supported by legspinner Davendra Bishoo and Christopher Barnwell - who broke the 92-run stand between Lasporis and Fletcher to trigger a collapse - as both grabbed two wickets each. In response, Guyana lost their openers Sewnarine Chattergoon and Barnwell in the space of six runs, but Bishoo and Leon Johnson added an unbeaten 27 to take their team to 73 for 2 at stumps. Guyana were beaten by Windward in the first round, and are now in a good position to turn the tables after an impressive fightback led by their bowlers.
