Comfortable victories were the order of the day in the Vinoo Mankad
(under-16) Trophy matches in Calcutta on Monday.
Madhya Pradesh scored a convincing six wicket victory over
Haryana. Put in to bat, Haryana were restricted to 156 for eight in 24
overs. They could not consolidate after skipper B Balla (28) and
Gaurav Gupta (38) had put on 56 runs for the second
wicket. Shrivastava played a stellar role in containing Haryana by
capturing five wickets for 16 runs off five overs. MP in reply lost
two wickets for 49 but were put on the road to victory by a third
wicket partnership of 77 runs between VS Tomar (51 with five fours and
two sixes) and Akash Singh (70 with ten fours and two sixes).
A first wicket partnership of 129 runs Harsh Banora and Waseem
Shahnawaz highlighted Jammu & Kashmir's eight wicket victory over
Daman & Diu. Put in to bat, Daman & Diu scored 176 for nine in 24
overs. They lost four wickets for 45 runs before skipper Savio Remedis
(34 with three fours and a six) and Sohib Shiligat (40 with nine
fours) added 73 runs for the fifth wicket. Monish Tandel then
contributed a valuable 32 with six fours and a six. J & K with the
openers in good form reached their target in 22 overs. While Shahnawaz
made 66 with the help of eight fours and a six, Banora remained
unbeaten with 52 with seven hits to the fence. Banora and Manish
Sharma (34 not out with five fours and two sixes) added 46 runs for
the unbroken third wicket.
Uttar Pradesh shrugged off a bad start to complete a 48 run win over
Maharashtra. Winning the toss, UP lost three wickets for 19 and half
the side for 68. But they recovered through a sixth wicket stand of 77
runs between Masan Sameer Khan (45 with four fours and three sixes)
and Javed Chowdhury (32 not out with three fours and a six). Dilip
Yadav then bolstered the late order with a bright 27 inclusive of
three fours and two sixes. Maharashtra made a poor start, never
recovered and were shot out for 121 in 22 overs.
Bengal defeated Tamil Nadu by 42 runs. Winning the toss, Bengal were
all out for 205 in 25 overs. Opener SJ Hazra (49 with seven fours) and
Soumyajit Das (31) put on 62 runs for the second wicket. Hazra and S
Motira (33) then condolidated by adding 65 runs for the third
wicket. Velmurugan was the most successful bowler with four for 25 off
five overs. Tamil Nadu lost wickets at regular intervals and were
never really in the hunt and were dismissed for 163 in 23
overs. Mustafi was the pick of the bowlers taking four for 29 from
four overs.
