The opening day of championship matches was hit heavily by rain, with no play possible at all in the matches between Glamorgan and Warwickshire, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire, and Hampshire and Lancashire.
County Championship Division 1:
KENT v SURREY: Surrey won the toss at Canterbury, and Adam Hollioake elected to bat. Butcher and Ward put on 66 for the first wicket, until Ealham had Butcher caught behind for 32. Thorpe's hopes of an early return to England colours took another blow, when he nicked a ball from Adams to the 'keeper for only three.
This was Adams first wicket in first-class cricket, and he continues to make the most of the opportunity given to him by the injuries to Kent's front-line bowlers. Ben Hollioake (24*) stayed with Ward (73*) until rain halted proceedings with Surrey 135/2 from 47.1 overs. Surrey are resting Alec Stewart, but Kent include Rahul Dravid, before his trip to Dhaka for the Asia Cup
County Championship Division 2:
ESSEX v SUSSEX: Only 18 overs were possible at Chelmsford, where Essex skipper Irani also chose to bat after winning the toss. Kirtley took three Essex wickets for 30 runs, removing Prichard for 7, Robinson for 9, and Stuart Law for 6. Grayson survived the onslaught and was unbeaten on 26* when rain stopped play , Essex at 59/3.
