Review of the day
The broadcasting of third-umpire communications during this series has been a learning experience for viewers. Nigel Llong was in the box for this match and on several occasions talked through his decisions. The most controversial one came when John Ward gave a not-out call for a caught-behind appeal when Matthew Wade was batting. Llong asked for a zoom of Wade's glove, then Hot Spot, then Real-Time Snicko, then back to the front-on shot again, then back to Hot Spot. He picked up a small mark on the glove from Hot Spot, but his main decision was whether Wade's bat had come off the handle. The evidence did not appear entirely conclusive, but Llong was satisfied, telling Ward he was happy the glove was on the bat and asking him to change his decision.

South Africa's selectors took a punt by leaving Ryan McLaren out and weakening the attack by including batsman Rilee Rossouw in his place. That meant AB de Villiers had to plan for 10 overs from part-timers and Farhaan Behardien's medium was his main option. Behardien came on within the first 10 overs and in his second over gave his captain a massive bonus breakthrough by nipping the ball back in and trapping Shane Watson lbw.

But two overs later, Rossouw showed that he was happy to play positively and struck three consecutive fours off Nathan Coulter-Nile. Rossouw drove past mid-off for the first boundary, then clipped one past midwicket and finally opened the face and ran the next one past the slips. Two more fours in the next over off Josh Hazlewood and Rossouw had really demoralised the Australians.
