ICC's `Deep Concern' with Samsung Ambush Marketing

The ICC today expressed its deep concern that it has been forced to disturb the ICC Cricket World Cup preparations of the Indian team because of the ambush marketing activities carried out by electronics company Samsung.

"It is extremely regrettable that IDI (the commercial arm of the ICC) has been compelled to interrupt the Indian players and management during the tournament to address this problem. Unfortunately, we were left with no option after Samsung ignored the agreement the players gave to the ICC," said ICC Chief Executive Malcolm Speed.

Mr Speed said that there is clearly documented evidence that Samsung is deliberately and blatantly flouting the contractual agreements that exist between IDI and the BCCI. "This is a pre-meditated campaign designed to infringe and devalue the rights secured by IDI's commercial partners. It cannot and will not be tolerated," he said.

Advertising campaigns featuring images of Indian players sponsored by Samsung are appearing in India and infringements have also been identified in South Africa.

IDI lawyers delivered letters to the Indian management and players last night (Thursday 13), in an attempt to secure their support in curtailing Samsung's activities. Earlier today, Indian team management advised the ICC that the Indian players were unaware of Samsung's actions and that they would provide further written undertakings to the ICC about stopping the ambush marketing activity.

If no resolution is reached immediately, the matter is likely to be referred to the ICC Technical Committee for further action.
